One Ocean Consulting will offer a Jenner by the Sea Camp, 3-day summer experience for school-aged students, July 22-24 at the Jenner Community Center. Designed to expose students to local marine habitats while fostering an understanding of how these systems work, students, ages 8-12, will participate in age-appropriate (and fun!) art and hands-on science activities. Activities will highlight the marine life that lives along the Sonoma Coast and will include an opportunity for students to print a t-shirt, using Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese art of fish printing. Fieldwork will include a low-tide visit to the rocky seashore, an exploration of a local sandy beach, and a visit to the harbor seal haul-out located at the mouth of the Russian River.
Roberta Dean and Bruce Stewart, two award-winning marine education specialists who have enjoyed sharing their love of the ocean with students of all ages for many years conduct One Ocean Consulting’s work. Ms. Dean, a credentialed teacher, attended Sonoma State University, and has a history of living in Jenner and along the Sonoma Coast. She developed her first marine education program, the Sonoma Sea School, which brought students to the Bodega Marine laboratory in the 1980’s. She went on to co-develop Project Ocean for the Oceanic Society in San Francisco, and the Marine Activities, Resources and Education (MARE) Program out of UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science. Bruce Stewart, who did his graduate work at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratory, developed education programs for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Texas State Aquarium, and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. He is an accomplished artist and biological illustrator, and has taught ocean science through art to students in the classroom and in the field for many years.
